TIGHT BATTLES IN NORTHERN REGIONS OFF ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP

Some tight battles look likely to develop during round five of the Northern Regions Off Road Championship to be run in conjunction with the national series Sun City 400 in the Pilanesberg on July 16 and 17.

Running selected regional championship events alongside national Absa Off Road Championship races is a move aimed at providing regional championships around the country with a shot in the arm. With a combined entry of over 80 cars the weekend is geared to keep even the most discerning off road enthusiast happy.

In the Special Vehicle overall championship Kobus Bekker and Philip Pienaar, in a Raceco, have a comfortable lead over veteran Peter Pfumfei in the singleseater WPP. Pfumfei, however, is under pressure from another veteran, Giel Nel, and Jaco Jonck in a Zarco with only four points separating them.

Bekker and Pienaar face some stiff competition in Class P with another veteran, Coetzee Labuscagne paired with daughter Sandra in a Zarco. Labuscagne, who played scrum half for the Blue Bulls in his day, was until this season a stalwart in the Production vehicle category in the national championship.

Pfumfei and Nel/Jonck will lock horns in Class B with eight points between them. Johan de Klerk and Willem Pretorius will keep them honest in another Zarco.

On the Production Vehicle front Chris and Anneline van Jaarsveld top the overall championship and will start favourites in Class E. They will again be out in a Ford Ranger with stiff opposition from a trio of Toyota Hilux crews in Ian Boshoff/Douw Grobler, Gene Boshoff/Lotter Klein and Aletta Alberts and Ben du Plessis.

Roelof and Lenert du Plessis (Toyota Hilux) are the lone entry in Class D, with the Class Z scrap likely to be between Hennie Lemmer/Dawie Lange in a Toyota Hilux and Johan Ferreira and Nico Kotze who will be out in a Toyota Land Cruiser.

Race control, the start/finish and designated service point will be based at the Sun City complex. The event is spectator friendly with 13 viewing points within easy access of the Sun City complex.

Public access to the start/finish, designated service point and spectator areas is free of charge.
